Civil Dialogue Program

 

Best for: Grades 8–12
Length: 1 class period (60 - 90 minutes)
Format: Teacher-facilitated lesson

 

What Students Learn

Students will learn how to:

  • Practice respectful dialogue

  • Listen to differing viewpoints

  • Explore civic values

  • Engage in thoughtful discussions about civic issues

  • Reflect on the role of dialogue in democracy

How the Program Works

The Civil Dialogue Program includes a complete lesson educators can easily facilitate in their classroom.

1. Student Preparation
Students complete a short assignment exploring civic values

and selecting a perspective on a civic issue.

2. Dialogue Introduction
Teachers introduce civil dialogue principles and establish

discussion agreements.

3. Structured Dialogue
Students participate in a guided dialogue using discussion

protocols provided in the lesson.

4. Reflection Activity
Students reflect on what they learned about dialogue,

listening, and civic participation.

Schools receive a complete digital lesson package including:

  • Written and digital curriculum

  • Teacher facilitation guide

  • Interactive slide deck (NearPod or Pear Deck)

  • Student preparation assignment
