
Civic Projects of the Central Valley
Below are several projects that are both currently underway and/or have been proposed and organized during the 2023 / 2024 school year. Feel free to look through these projects to help you develop ideas for your own school or community.
2024/25 Civic Engagement Projects
Sanger West High School

Civic Projects: Bravery Bags
Description:
Surveyed needs and solicited for donations to make care bags for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Valley Children's Hospit
Leader: Healthcare Pathway Program
Civic Project: Health Care Awareness Fair
Description: Create a health care awareness fair and more to the school and local community.
Leader: Mr. Joshua Morales
Civic Project: Del Rey Park Restoration
Description: Students at Sanger West are partnering with the local Boys & Girls Club to take action to improve the poor conditions of their local park. Not only are they organizing a cleanup effort to restore the space, but they are also designing and creating a mural that reflects the strength and unity of their community. Through this project, they aim to foster a sense of pride and belonging while making the park a more welcoming place for everyone.

Farber High School

Civic Projects: Bullying (elementary students) Discrimination towards immigrants (teens/adults) and Homeless (low income)
Description:
One group will produce an Anti-Bullying Video with Pledge to end bullying.

Our Racism: group is organizing an Awareness Campaign that will include social media and a unity wall with inspirational quotes
Our Homelessness group will do a Week long Supply Drive on campus then delivering to homeless shelter

Hoover High School
Leader: Ms. Song Vu
Civic Projects: Human Impact on Wildlife (local riparian habitat) Inflation (teen parents), Homeless (low income), and Drug Prevention (Students).
Description: One group is focusing on co-existing with wildlife, planning an awareness campaign around Earth Day to educate both their school and the wider community on the positive and negative impacts of human activity. They will also bring in experts to share insights on wildlife conservation. Another group is addressing homelessness among young families by collaborating with Fresno EOC to explore solutions and provide support.

Civic Project: Gang Prevention
Description: We will be organizing both a guest speaker series and a gang awareness campaign at our school.

Leader: Mr. Harding
Civic Project: Monofilament Recycling
Description: Students at Kings River High School were inspired to take action after participating in a river cleanup and witnessing the impact of pollution firsthand. Motivated by the amount of fishing line left along the banks—a major threat to local wildlife—they designed and built monofilament recycling bins to reduce waste and protect the river ecosystem. Their project combined environmental awareness with hands-on problem-solving, making a lasting contribution to the health of the Kings River.

Kings River High

Civic Project: Animal Strays and Mental Health Resources for Veterans.
Description:
Our Stray animal group is educating students and families on ways you can help reduce the stray population (ie - don't buy from breeder, spay and neuter, and help community partners).
Our Veteran group is working with local community parters to help educate the community on why they should care about mental health concerns for those who have served to defend our country.

Description: Building tiny houses to aid in the housing crisis.

Kings River High

Fresno Youth Service Council
Leader: Mrs. Tammy Eggert
Schools: Edison High School, Justin Garza High, and Sanger West.
Description: The Fresno Youth Council has launched a civic project focused on teen mental health. They created a survey designed to gather input directly from students about the mental health challenges they face. This valuable data will help schools and community organizations better understand and address these issues. To ensure broad participation, Council members are distributing fliers and posters throughout schools and community spaces across the Central Valley, encouraging students to share their voices and be part of the solution.

Edison High School

Civic Project: Peace Garden
Description: We made a peace garden on the school campus. We will have a ribbon cutting celebration to commemorate the opening where city leaders will come to school. There will be a peace pole commemorating all 7 languages spoken at Edison High School - highlighting ethnicities!

Description: Spread awareness of bullying to those who just look different by creating a website and video to be shown during Arthop.

Civic Project: Owls for Pest Control
Description:
As a way to reduce the use of toxic pesticides in farmland, we plan to build raptor boxes and place them both on farms and riparian habitat so that they may promote a healthier pest control.

Civic Project: Furry Friends Club
Description: We will create club/group to help raise awareness for homeless animals, help neuter stray animals for free, and overall create a safe environment for our furry friends. hopefully with the help of the SPCA. Euthanization shelters are still growing at an alarming rate, hopefully with the help of this group we will be able to help find our furry and non-furry friends a home and stay off the streets.

Civic Project: Stress Ball Project
Description: Our group decided to make stress balls for students who are not feeling well and need work of some anxiety. We promoted the project, recruited volunteers, set up a booth to distribute the balls during lunch.

Description: To create an experience that may influence and encourage the most vulnerable population to be initiated by gangs to make alternative and healthy choices.

Civic Project: Lost Lake Heritage
Description: Our group spent several days out at lost lake to remove graffiti from the Native American grinding holes. We also built signs to ask the community to preserve the site and refrain from defacing this special area.

Civic Project: Seniors Helping Seniors
Description: Our group trained seniors at Vineyards senior living facility on cyber crimes and how to personally prevent them. Workshops included how to protect your online passwords.
