Our Programs

At the Civic Education Center (CEC), we inspire students to become informed, engaged citizens through our comprehensive programs. Our innovative approach provides students and educators with the tools, resources, and support needed to achieve meaningful civic engagement.

Civic Based Learning Program
(Both in-class and online Curriculum)

The Civic-Based Learning Program (CBLP) guides K-12 students to critically analyze American civic values and apply common ground solutions to real problems in their school and community. Through a structured, project-based curriculum using the Gradual Release of Responsibility model, students transition from guided learning to independent civic action. The program connects youth with community leaders, organizations, and local resources, incorporating civil dialogue and authentic youth voice to ensure their projects are impactful.

 

What is included:  

  • Written and Digital Curriculum - 20 Lesson Plans

  • Digital Slide Decks with student participation integration
    (NearPod or Pear Deck)

  • Student Workbook for assignments, grading, and reflection

  • Teacher Guide with lesson plans and facilitation tips

  • 1 year of online educator support

  • Free registration for 5 teachers to the CEC Educator Institute (September)

  • 10 students per school site receive free registration to the Scout Island Leadership Training (October 8)

  • 1 onsite facilitation session from CEC staff (teacher training or student workshop)

State Seal of Civic Engagement

CEC consults with districts and schools to support students earning the State Seal.  This award is for graduates who meet the criteria and contribute to their school, community or nation. This CEC Program includes:

    • Help with Board policy on seal criteria

    • Guidance and support for Civic Engagement Projects

    • Develop civic engagement programs in classes, clubs and extended learning programs

Civil Dialogue program

The Civil Dialogue Curriculum equips students with the skills to engage in respectful, thoughtful conversations about important community and civic issues. Through guided discussions, reflective activities, and structured dialogue practices, students learn how to listen actively, express their perspectives clearly, and consider viewpoints different from their own. The program emphasizes critical thinking, empathy, and constructive communication, helping students build confidence in participating in civic conversations. By practicing civil dialogue, students strengthen their ability to collaborate, understand complex issues, and contribute positively to their communities.

Civic Leadership and Team Building Program

CEC facilitates a variety of activities that promote the building of democratic skills, such as civil dialogue, communication, healthy decision making, trust, cooperation, commitment and other essential skills for living in a democratic and beloved community.
